Chapter 19. The Past

I pass out as soon as Octavian orders the big SUV into motion. Christy, the sycophant I asked for, is behind the wheel, and four vampires make the vehicle seem very small around me. Sulla is sitting between me and a pair of large, blonde vampires talking to each other in a language I can’t understand. He leans down and murmurs, “The twins—Hansel and Gretel. They belong to Augustus’ line, and are two of the best Knights the House has.”

I blink at him, still stuck on something. “Are they really named Hansel and Gretel?”

Sulla laughs and the blonde female leans around him, grinning. “Nope. But Dad was stuck on fairy tales for a while, a few centuries after we were changed. He started calling us that, and it stuck.”

“What she really means is, August called them that once, the only time he gave them a name aside from Twins, and they refused to answer to anything else.”

Sulla pulls me into his side, and I can feel Octavian’s hot stare from behind us, and the friendly arguing from the twins and Sulla, and I fall, hard under it.

I dream, and I can feel panic even there. Blood and screams and a field drenched in sunlight and—a hand smoothes over my back and I whimper. I feel myself being shifted and a deep voice in my ear, soothing and nonsensical. I snuggle into him, inhaling his scent and the nightmares slide away slowly, and if I dream anything else, I don’t remember it.
